Indica vs. Sativa vs. Hybrid, Whats the difference and whats for me?!

Posted on March 28 2016

Many people in the medical cannabis community have been confused by the specific species of cannabis and their properties, so hopefully this will help set the minds at ease and help make you a more informed patient when selecting your medication. Most people with some medical cannabis knowledge commonly group all Indica’s and all Sativa’s into their own category marked “Medication that makes you sleep” and “Medication that makes you lifted and energetic”. This is a broad and mis-categorized labeling that should be used as a general guide but not the rule of law. The truth is, not all Indica’s will put you to sleep. And likewise, not all Sativa’s will keep you up. While heavier Indica strains will most definitely put you to sleep and are great for insomnia or extreme pain, lighter strains will simply give you steady minor pain relief but while not making you heavy headed and drowsy. These lighter Indica strains are better for minor discomfort or cramps. Likewise, while Sativa does hold some extremely high energy strains that are mainly used for anti-depression purposes, you can still manage to find some heavier strains that will still couch lock you. The twist is, that no 2 people are created alike. And that bodes especially true when it comes to CBN/CBD/THC and how it affects you. So first, in order to figure out what you’re looking for in a strain for your ailment, you will need to explore how your specific body type responds to different types of cannabis. Second, you will need to figure out proper dose levels to achieve the correct effect. But as a base reference, anxiety based ailments you want to steer clear of high energy saliva’s as they will create paranoia. What you need to look for is strains that are Indica dominant hybrids generally in the 60-40 range. This will allow you to stay clear minded enough to do work but Indica heavy enough to keep you medically calmed down and focused. Generally I hear a lot of people with back pain have resulting insomnia from the discomfort felt while stretched out. What you will need is two different types of Indica’s. A heavy pure Indica for sleep purposes at night, and a 70/30 blend depending on discomfort levels. Again always test yourself and make sure you know what blends work perfect for you. If you’re suffering from depression a pure very high energy sativa is the best route to alleviate symptoms and lift spirits. PTSD sufferers are a little harder to lock down as symptoms vary, but it’s normally best to stay away from anything too extreme one way or the other. Try from the middle on a 50/50 blend hybrid and work your way outward on the Sativa side to feel the scale for which is best for you. Stay away from anything too heavy as it could create symptoms of depression, and stay away from anything too energetic as it could create panic attacks. Remember you know you best, and you can make the best decisions for your health, when given the proper tools to make the correct decisions.
